turbine kill switch

Christmas brought us a fantastic new addition to the wind turbine control system. This is a three pole switch which Jona gave us, and we wired it in to the AC power coming from the Axial Flux alternator. The cable coming down the tower goes into a 30 amp receptacle outside on the battery box. This enables us to unwind the cable when necessary as the turbine yaws.

The red cables are 6 ought and tie all three phases together when the switch is on. Wired in parallel at the bottom are the outputs of the alternator. These run to three full wave bridge rectifiers which change the alternating current to direct current and also block electricity from returning to the alternator, so shorting the phases together do not affect the batteries on the other side of the rectifiers.

In the above image the rectifiers can be seen, and yeah, we need to clean the mess of wires up. The next project will be to change the placement of the rectifiers on the heat sink so the wires are inside the metal box. After that we'll setup the dump load resistors in that box as well. I still need to locate the proper resistors, but the system is coming together, albeit slowly.
