Good Morning

I do appear in trees often lately. What's that all about?

People of Las Vegas are setting up for Fiestas. I did not have time to check it out, other than  peripherally since Desertgate where I work out of, is on Bridge Street. Today should be interesting as well, with festivities all day. The trick in years past is to get all the equipment I need in the morning and not to go back in to the Plaza area, but that hasn't happened yet. I've been sub-contracting for Desertgate Internet for five years now. Friday is payday, yippee, getting my check is always a good reason to weave through the throngs of cars surrounding the Plaza.

I found a beautiful spot yesterday. It began to sprinkle as I approached Romeroville and exited the freeway heading toward Ojito Fios Subdivision. I was early for the first call in the area, and was driving slower than usual. As I crested one hill on a dirt road, the sprinkle turned into a full blown rain storm. After three months of drought, even the sprinkle was wondrous.

I pulled over, rolled down my window, and let the rain wash away the dust and dirt from the Jeep, while I sat in the splendor of the moment.  The rain lasted for five or ten minutes. It appeared to only be raining on the little hill top where I was parked, or at least that is how special it felt to me.

Part Two:8:00AM (guess what time I wrote Part One)

Alrighty then! I took our dogs on a hike to the river!

River-walk-July6th2012

(River-walk-July6th2012) The field looked better, although I don't think we got anywhere near as much rain as the magical hilltop got. I dug my fingers into the earth, it felt cool, not necessarily moist. Maybe today is Las Tusas's turn for rain. I hope my hike was a hike of dance, rain dance that is.

River-walk-July6th2012-Andy.

(River-walk-July6th2012-Andy) Sandy in the process of being renamed Andy as there are many Sandys in our lives. I love the way the camera caught the morning sun on our proud little dog.

River-walk-July6th2012-Andy-Buddy.

(River-walk-July6th2012-Andy-Buddy) I don't know which mutt was first in. They were all in before I got there. One day we'll have a pack of dogs that heal.

River-walk-July6th2012-mint

(River-walk-July6th2012-mint) As I crossed over the beaver dam I caught the scent of mint. The leaves don't look like mint, but it did smell minty. Perhaps one of our BMNer Botanists will identify this plant for us.

River-walk-July6th2012-Riparian-zone

(River-walk-July6th2012-Riparian-zone) With the drought, grasses as well as most plants dried up and died. The river area has more clear passageways.

River-walk-July6th2012Bros

(River-walk-July6th2012Bros)  Buddy being competitive with his brother Ramses, Danny's dog.

River-walk-July6th2012-thickets

(River-walk-July6th2012-thickets) Very pleasant. Reminded me of a bamboo forest, well sorta

River-walk-July6th2012-pool

(River-walk-July6th2012-pool) There are a lot of little pools on the river.

River-walk-July6th2012dam

(River-walk-July6th2012dam) More of the minty smelling plant

River-walk-July6th2012three-dogs

(River-walk-July6th2012three-dogs) They know how to have fun, these guys

Well y'all have a great weekend, we plan to.

I'm thinking the foundation pit it pretty much where it needs to be. This weekend, I'll shift my focus to plumbing layout. At this point we're trying to decide if we should mix concrete or get a truck load. I'm leaning toward a truckload since we're short handed. Cost is always a factor, "Doh!"

it is my intention to use sand , When I said go back to nature, I meant through entropy, sorry I'm still recuperating from the work week and not quite all here yet

  • Paulus

What you're saying doesn't make sense. What could be more natural than sand? Plus, sand is a suitable foundation material. Pine needles isn't. If you really want  it to go back to nature, don't use concrete. Build an adobe floor incorporating foam underlay. But this is hardly natural either. So just use dirt and pine needles. Sorry Brian, couldn't resist!

"A Blinding?" Not familiar with this term. On the idea of rot, I'm thinking I do want this to rot and go back to nature. Nell and I are nearly 60 we won't need this structure to last past our lifetimes. I know this notion  is unheard of these days with all the building codes and licenses.

  • Paulus

A blinding or layer of sand soaked with water just before the block of foam is laid would do it.  No pine needles. You don't want anything that would rot and open up a space.

    What an opening photo!!

Rough, scaly, weathered texture, primitive, unadorned and natural, showing the years and years of growth and withstanding all of nature's forces…

On the other hand, the ponderosa pine tree looks nice and provides a good contrast.

Re the foundation, what about using polystyrene as an insulator under your concrete floor? Paul

    • boss

yes I want to use insulation under the floor, but and there is always that, but, at this point the surface of the pit is too irregular to lie a sheet on. Don’t know yet what to do there, but it should have at least a blanket of something. Crazy old hippie wants to use pine needles for everything, perhaps a layer of tyvek over pine needles, then sand and gravel from the river, to pack it. I don’t know just spit balling. This place doesn’t give us much feeling of permanence, which I like to turn into options. Brian Rodgers
