BMN Moving On

Brian’s Morning Newsletter

Good Morning
Alrighty then, my Credit Union decided I wasn’t reporting all of my income on my taxes, and denied my loan request. If I could have explained, which wasn’t in the end possible, because my request was sent to the Santa Fe office, I would have shown them that in the first years of working for Desertgate as a sub-contractor I worked two days per week, now I am working three days per week. Our tax reporting was correct, we really did subsist on poverty level income.

C’est la vie. I wasn’t “all in,” to use a poker term, it was just a plan, one plan in fact. It may have worked out with the high mileage Jeep Liberty, but there was certainly no guaranty. I wrote the guy in Albuquerque first thing yesterday morning and informed him what that I was out of the bidding. A little sad to be sure, but in some way, relieved that we do not owe the bank $12,000 for a vehicle with 95,000 miles on the odometer.

BMNer Dave the Wave called pretty soon after I got the not unexpected news from the credit union. His call cheered me considerably. Matter of fact we had a rolling on the floor laugh after discussing options. I was telling Dave that if I really wanted to I could, what with all my mad-crazy-skilz as a electro-mechanical modification wizard, fix the cabin light in the Trooper so it came on when I opened the door, ya know, if I really wanted to.

It occurred to me while discussing some of my options that actually the cab-light does come on when the passenger side door is opened. Obviously I looked into the door switch on the drivers side, but it was working, yet for unknown reasons it still would not acquiesce simple door position data to the dome light. As usual I have bigger fish to fry and never went any further with my trouble-shooting.

Indeed the conversation yesterday only for the briefest of moments  lain in cab-light woes.  Dave asked what I had for a plan “B”

I had thought about a plan “B” Most of the secondary plans required a lot more work than I have time for now that I’m working more days per week. One plan was to buy a secondhand diesel engine and transmission from Japan. There are a few major problems with installing a right hand drive unit in a left hand drive vehicle such as the Isuzu Trooper. In the Japanese vehicle the clutch pedal and everything is on the other side of the engine, which just means all of these things will require some form of modification to switch them over to the other side.

That’s when it occured to me I had a rare opportunity here: I could actually murder two birdies with one stone. I could simply move the steering wheel over to the right side, then and if you’ve been following along like I think you have, upon entering the right hand drive vehicle with the door switch that works on that side, bingo! Dome light ought to come on, que no?

Anyway, last night I tried to look for something on ebay, and every forum I could find which had diesel engine swaps
First thinking a CJ Jeep with a 4BT Cummins (four cyl diesel) A very popular conversion for the rock crawler crowd. The cargo area is seriously lacking, and I absolutely need a rack for my ladder, and a closed in and lockable area for tools and WiFi gear.  Cute though, eh?

A fair amount of engine swappers install the Mercedes five cylinder diesel engines, some into Jeeps, I saw one in a Jeep Cherokee, looked more like the size cargo area I need

4BT-Cummins

Above is the Cummins 4BT in a Jeep CJ. The 4Bt is the same engine as the 6BT (six cyl) in our Dodge dually, just minus two cylinders. It is a pretty sweet engine, and it fits well with my requirement of smaller is better

Jeep Cherokee, my sister Mona leases Jeep Cherokees, she says they are pretty well shot when the lease is up in two years. Not a great review for Jeep

The Jeep Cherokee is also used by rock crawlers as the above image shows.

Welp, I gotta go.
Today I am told we will be working on the Mora WiFi tower. Coool cool coolio
That’s another seventy footer and my guess yours truly will have some photos of the Mora valley and beyond for ya tomorrow morning

We talked about your situation at work… You can read here what people had to say…

BTW, it’s really tough reading this text against the wood grain background. I don’t know much about WordPress but maybe you can fade the background a bit?

    Thanks Mary Beth,
Nell and I decided to go back to our original plan before the local Jeep diesel showed up, which is to say, we’ll save money until we have enough to buy something we can afford. This combined with the repairing of mom’s original Blazer and return to her of that vehicle, she says we can have the red Blazer, to use then sell when we saved money for the diesel.

Sorry the credit union didn’t work out. Unfortunately, while they are generally more amenable than banks, they do still have to follow certain guidelines as far as income and taxes. You might try the Bank of Las Vegas or First National. They are both small community banks that might consider your situation, your long time in Las Vegas and also be familiar with the irregular salary histories many Las Vegans who own similar properties or who don’t have typical ‘careers’ and incomes might have.

However, do be careful of the rate they might give you. Some places will charge an exorbitant interest rate on the loan in exchange for an uneven or non-existent credit history.
