BMN Campo-Horno-2009

Brian’s Morning Newsletter for  May 18th 2009

Thanks to Brittany and Desi for pulling together a powerful work crew we have the cob oven nearing completion.

Four courses of recycled red brick have been laid on top of a base of hot mud
We placed large blocks of wood along the outside to hold the cob or adobe whichever term pleases you, from oozing out in places where the mud was laid on thick.

Looks simple enough, but keeping the brick level and square atop a mountain of oozing mud was quite a feat.

Yes, it was very hot in the front of the oven. I can tell you this that big wood heater never worked that well when it was just sitting in a room. Above you can see the heavy wood blocks we placed in the back of the horno to hold up the oven bricks. We figure to leave the blocks in place for the Memorial day Campo, unless several more good fires in the horno indeed do dry out the mud.

I wish I had taken a picture of the fire in that stove, it was an inferno. It has the horno steaming from several places as the heat dries out the mud.

Before the mudders arrived Kevin, Jose and I built a very comfortable bench seat with a back rest.  After we finish the horno, we’ll build another bench on the right side of the horno sort of connecting the outdoor kitchen to the round table.

In the above image you can see the new bench to the right of the horno and the round table to the left. While we were working on the bench, a little brease came up and broke one of the posts holding the green tarp over the round table. Upon further investigation we found out all those posts we hastily set in for Nell and my wedding celebration four years ago had already rotted away on the bottom. After the first one broke and we painstakingly removed the remainder of rotten wood from the hole we went around to the other three posts and gently pulled them up.

We knew when we put those pipe posts in they wouldn’t last, now there are four beautifully peeled Cedar posts in the holes left by the Pine, sweet. The new posts still need tamping in, and then the plan if we have time is to add a few more latillas across from post to post, to make holding the tarp in place more securely, possible. We are doing well time-wise, the horno is looking amazing, the stage is pretty well set to go, we are thinking of building in a table for setting up the turntables, but other than that, all it really needs is the Tusas Speakers brought up from the barn.

We took advantage of Wal-Mart’s and EverStart’s free replacement policy and traded in last years four deep cycle batteries. It took going to the Santa Fe store for the  second pair, and thanks to Eric and Kevin for making the trip to "the Wal-Mart" after the Jane’s Addiction concert last week, we also have two new batteries. Making the total batteries in our bank, eight. The plan is to keep four at a time charging on the wind turbine while we operate the stereo off the other other set of four batteries.   A set of two deep cycle batteries from Wal-MArt now costs $75.00 each plus core charge, so we need to take donations toward the  batteries as  well as the insurance policy this year.

I don’t know what else to mention, except we’re really getting excited about Tusas and hope top see you all out here for the camp.
Sincerely
Brian Rodgers
